The other team is out of shape, its players are facing the wrong way, and the space behind them is open. Teams that score in that window are not faster. They have simply decided, before they win it, what they will do when they do.

This game builds that habit. It is a transition game, and it works for any age group with a few adjustments.

Setup

Mark a field about 40 x 30 yards with a halfway line. Put a goal (with a goalkeeper) on one end line.

On the opposite end line, set up two small gates (two cones, three yards apart) about 12 yards apart from each other. These are the counter gates.

Four attackers (blue) start in the attacking half with the balls. Three defenders (red) and a goalkeeper defend the goal. Two more red players, the counter players, wait on the halfway line.

Keep a supply of balls in the goal so the game restarts quickly.

<rect width="600" height="400" fill="#3f8f4a"/>
<rect x="20" y="20" width="560" height="360" fill="none" stroke="#fff" stroke-width="3"/>
<line x1="300" y1="20" x2="300" y2="380" stroke="#fff" stroke-width="2" stroke-dasharray="8 6"/>
<rect x="20" y="150" width="14" height="100" fill="#fff"/>
<text x="42" y="145" fill="#fff" font-size="13">Full-size or 7 v 7 goal + GK</text>
<line x1="566" y1="120" x2="566" y2="160" stroke="#ffd400" stroke-width="5"/>
<line x1="566" y1="240" x2="566" y2="280" stroke="#ffd400" stroke-width="5"/>
<text x="470" y="108" fill="#fff" font-size="13">Counter gates</text>
<circle cx="62" cy="200" r="13" fill="#222"/><text x="62" y="205" fill="#fff" font-size="12" text-anchor="middle">GK</text>
<g fill="#d62828"><circle cx="130" cy="130" r="13"/><circle cx="130" cy="270" r="13"/><circle cx="150" cy="200" r="13"/></g>
<g fill="#fff" font-size="12" text-anchor="middle"><text x="130" y="135">D</text><text x="130" y="275">D</text><text x="150" y="205">D</text></g>
<g fill="#d62828" stroke="#fff" stroke-width="2"><circle cx="320" cy="140" r="13"/><circle cx="320" cy="260" r="13"/></g>
<g fill="#fff" font-size="12" text-anchor="middle"><text x="320" y="145">C</text><text x="320" y="265">C</text></g>
<g fill="#1d4ed8"><circle cx="250" cy="110" r="13"/><circle cx="250" cy="290" r="13"/><circle cx="220" cy="200" r="13"/><circle cx="360" cy="200" r="13"/></g>
<g fill="#fff" font-size="12" text-anchor="middle"><text x="250" y="115">A</text><text x="250" y="295">A</text><text x="220" y="205">A</text><text x="360" y="205">A</text></g>
<circle cx="236" cy="200" r="6" fill="#fff" stroke="#000"/>

<defs><marker id="ar" markerWidth="10" markerHeight="10" refX="8" refY="5" orient="auto"></marker></defs>

<text x="300" y="396" fill="#fff" font-size="13" text-anchor="middle">Blue attacks left. Red wins it, then has 6 seconds to score through a gate.</text>

Win It, Go: blue (A) attacks the big goal. Red (D) defends and, on winning the ball, counters with the two waiting players (C) toward the yellow gates.

How it works

Blue attacks the goal in a 4 v 3 situation. If blue scores or the ball goes out, the next ball starts right away from the coach. If red wins the ball, either by a tackle, an interception, or a save by the keeper, red has six seconds to score by dribbling or passing through either counter gate. The two counter players join the moment possession changes, so it becomes a 5 v 4 going the other way, since the blue players behind the ball have to recover.

Count the six seconds out loud. It adds pressure and makes the point that speed matters.

Progressions

Start with no time limit so players learn where to go. Then add the six-second clock.

Give the attacking team a rule: if they lose the ball, the nearest blue player must press immediately for three seconds (the counter-press) before the team drops back.

Make the counter players start on the far side of the halfway line so the first pass has to travel farther.

Finish with a normal goal in place of the gates, so the transition ends with a real shot.

Coaching points

When we win it: look forward first. The first pass should go to the open player facing the right way, not to the nearest teammate.

When we lose it: the closest player pressures the ball at once. The rest of the team protects the middle and delays the counter.

Spacing: the counter players should spread wide so the ball carrier has two clear options.

Mindset: losing the ball is a signal to react, not a time to complain.

A note for coaches of younger players: use shorter distances and give breaks to keep the intensity high. Praise any attempt to look up and play forward quickly, even when the pass is not perfect.

The six seconds after winning the ball decide more games than most coaches admit.
