I’m always looking for a warm-up that does more than get the blood moving. This one gets the team to enjoy themselves and without me saying a word, shows them the most important idea in team defending: one player can’t do it alone, and a group that doesn’t move together falls apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Round 1: Tag (no balls)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

  1. Mark out a grid about 25 x 25 yards. One player is “it.”<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. When “it” tags someone, they lock hands and hunt together. Every player tagged joins the chain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. If the chain breaks when they make a tag, it doesn’t count.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Last player caught wins and starts as “it” next time.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Round 2: The Chain with a ball<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Now everyone except the chain has a ball. Instead of tagging, the chain has to win the ball or knock it out of the grid. A player who loses their ball leaves it outside and joins the chain. The chain still can’t let go of hands. Two minutes a round, then pick a new starter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What to coach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Let them play the first round with no coaching at all. The early chain will be a mess: everyone pulling a different direction, nobody talking, the chain snapping every time they lunge. Then stop it and ask, “Why did it get easier to catch people once you started talking?” From there, a few things to look for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Someone has to lead.<\/strong> A chain with four voices goes nowhere. Usually one player starts calling “left,” “right,” “stop,” and the chain suddenly works. That’s the center back organizing the line in front of them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Use the lines and corners.<\/strong> The good chains stop chasing and start steering. They push dribblers toward the edge of the grid and then curve around them. Same as forcing a winger toward the sideline in a game.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The ends do the work.<\/strong> The middle player stays in front of the ball. The end players close the gaps. That’s pressure with cover on both sides.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Don’t over-commit.<\/strong> One player lunging breaks the chain, just like one defender diving in breaks a back four.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
